SCAM ALERT WARNING

Date of Release: Thursday, September 9**, 2019

[Rockingham County, N.C.] - The Rockingham County Sheriff's Office has received a number of reports from residents of "Social Security" scam phone calls being received over the past few days.

In one version of this scam, the caller claims they are federal officers (DEA, Marshals, etc.) and that the intended target's social security number has been associated with a rental car seized that was full of drugs, weapons etc. The scammers go on to tell the intended target that their bank accounts are being frozen and warrants are being issued for their arrest, UNLESS they go purchase $500 worth of gift cards (Walgreens, Best Buy, eBay, Amazon etc.) and call them back with the card numbers. When they have the gift card numbers, they transfer the money off the card electronically. This is all FAKE! The callers are NOT federal agents, but are actually calling from overseas, though the numbers are made to look local on caller IDs.

DO NOT GIVE THESE PEOPLE ANY INFORMATION.
TELL THEM YOU KNOW IT IS A SCAM AND HANG UP!

Another version of the "Social Security" scam has scam callers telling potential targets their social security number has been compromised and suspended. The scam caller will ask the potential target to verify their information by giving their full name, date of birth, social security number, etc. (none of which the scammer actually has). Social Security numbers CANNOT be suspended. Think of a social security number as a serial number the United States Government assigns to a person at birth. It is not like a credit card number that can be "compromised" and a new card and number be issued.

These calls are also coming from overseas, though the numbers are made to look local on caller IDs.

DO NOT GIVE THESE PEOPLE ANY INFORMATION.
TELL THEM YOU KNOW IT IS A SCAM AND HANG UP!

Help us spread the word to your friends and loved ones so that no one else falls victim to these unscrupulous scammers!
