Veterans of military service, whether wartime
or peacetime, may qualify for a variety of federal benefits and
services provided by the Veterans Administration. The
Veterans Service Office in Rockingham County serves as a link to
these benefits. Local services include:
Pension/Compensation Benefits: The
Officer assists the veteran, his spouse, or his family in
completing claims for these monetary benefits and mails them
to the Winston Salem Regional Office.
Information and Referral for Medical Care:
Although the VA monetary and medical systems are maintained
separately, the Officer can provide basic information and referral
services related to Medical benefits. The Officer can
also provide information on transportation services to the Durham
VA Medical Center.
Education: Children of veteran parents
who are at least 20% service connected, who died while in service,
or who died from a service connected condition may qualify for
assistance with education after high school. The VSO assists
in filing claims for these benefits.
Loans: Most veterans qualify for a
Certificate of Eligibility for Loan Guarantee. This
certificate guarantees a portion of a mortgage loan, and may often
provide a slightly lower rate of interest. The local office
provides the request form and will assist the veteran in
completing it. Although the guarantee applies to a variety
of home loans, it may not be used for personal or business loans.
Burial Benefits/Military Honors: Families
of Rockingham County Veterans who qualify for assistance
with burial costs usually file for them at the local funeral home.
The funeral home also assists with securing Military Honors and
flags for deceased veterans.
For more information on these and other
services, contact your local VSO.
