On May 19, 2009, Governor Perdue signed legislation that makes significant changes in the state laws governing smoking in public places.  Beginning January 2, 2010, smoking will be prohibited in the enclosed areas of (1) all food establishments, (2) bars and (3) lodging establishments that prepare and serve food and drink.  However, 20% of the guest rooms in a lodging establishment may be designated as smoking guest rooms.  Other exceptions include:

  1. A cigar bar may allow smoking if smoke does not migrate into enclosed area where smoking is otherwise prohibited under state law.
  2. A private club may allow smoking

The new smoking policy will reduce the exposure to secondhand smoke and subsequently improve the quality of life for many citizens.

Want more information on how you can quit the smoking habit? Visit  www.quitlineNC.com.
